Philip has been in private practice as a solicitor for 25 years. He joined Avery Clifford now part of Aston Bond in its infancy in 1983 undertaking, principally, litigation work.

This experience and being an advocate of "prevention is better than cure" led him into drafting contracts of various types and it is commercial work that now occupies most of his time. He was appointed a Deputy District Judge in 1992 and has sat regularly since, dealing with the full array of disputes that come before the civil courts.

He sees these two functions, though different, as symbiotic. "Having to judge cases forces one to focus on what is fundamental in an agreement whilst not overlooking the significant effect detail can make".
